Helambu Trek is a comparatively easy and short trek that is very close to the Kathmandu Valley. Most people with moderate physical fitness and ability should have no great difficulty with this adventure. Despite being so close to Kathmandu, this beautiful region enjoys the peace of a less travelled trek. The Helambu Trek gives an opportunity for trekkers to experience the wonder of Nepal’s diverse geography in a comparatively short span of time. Travelling from the lush green valleys filled with exquisite rhododendron forests to the magnificent snow capped Himals is an experience you won’t likely forget.
Helambu Village is located near Langtang valley, which is home to many glaciers and provides some spectacular views. This trek is wonderfully peaceful yet spectacularly beautiful and a good trek for those less inclined to take on high altitudes. Experience the charm of the gently flowing rivers , crystal blue lakes, and diverse natural forests. A historical and ancient belief is interestingly attached regarding the name of the place which is believed to have been derived from ‘Hyolmo’ who are the local inhabitants of this valley. These indigenous people date back to the 13th century who migrated from Tibet to Helambu. People here are extremely helpful and cooperate with the travelers who make their visits to this part of the circuit. The great Himalayan scenery at the border of Tibet makes the trek to this region and unbelievable experience. Ideally the Helambu trek begins from Sundarijal, an hour’s drive from Kathmandu. After an hour’s walk the trek reaches as far as Shivapuri National Park, continuing along the Chisapani, Kutumsang, Thadepati, Sermathang and Melamchi. Helambu Village Trek also provides spectacular views of Langtang, Ganesh Himal and DorjeLakpa. A trek leading into the lives of friendly Tamang people and villages makes it exciting and fantastic till the trek ends at Melamchi.
Though the trek is shorter as compared to other trekking circuits, it makes up for its shortness with vast range of places for visit in such a short span of time. This trek is suitable for people who have a moderate level of fitness and ability. The trekking altitude ranges between 800 – 3600 meters and is often considered a good choice for those concerned about altitude. (Please also see our other treks for those concerned with altitude.)
